CHRISTIAN BELIEVERS DISCIPLES AND WORKERS

Acts 11:19-26

I. Introduction

A. Believers receive a new name: Christian

1. It began in Antioch a Greek city.

2. How did it happen?

B. Four words that tell the story

1.PersecuciĆ³n.

2. Preaching.

3. Power.

4. Test.

C. Follow this path to truth

.

II. Meditation

A. Persecution (v. 19)

l. It began with the stoning of Stephen (Acts 7:54 - 60).

2. The testimony of Stephen to death (7:59-60).

3. This attack was intended to destroy the church.

4. The opposite occurred.

a. The believers were scattered, which made the church grow.

b. We minister wherever we are. Wherever God sends us

c. We must spread each week and spread the gospel.

5. They founded churches where the faithful have fled.

.

B. Preaching (v. 20)

l. In Antioch thing happened again.

a. All the preaching was addressed to Jews.

b. This did not fulfill the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20).

c. Now began to preach to the Gentiles.

2. Very important for the future of the church.

3. Antioch became the second center of range.

.

C. Power (v. 21)

1. The Lord's hand was with them.

2. A great number believed and turned to the Lord.

a. They were pagan idolaters.

b. Now they were born again.

3. The message of what was happening began to spread.

a. The news came to Jerusalem.

b. Barnabas was sent to teach the new converts.

4. Barnabas was a man filled with the Holy Spirit (v. 24).

5. Barnabas sought out Paul to help him in teaching.

D. Proof (v. 26)

l. Barnabas and Paul were there for a year to develop the church.

a. They had expected to stay for so long.

b. The blessings of God were so great that they could not leave.

2. Lives were changed and many took notice.

3. These lives transformed given its new name: "Christians."
